There is a strip of Hanley Road with Autohaus BMW, St. Louis Porsche, Mini, and Butler Alfa Romeo & Maserati.

My kids love looking at cars, so after my daughter’s Ballet class we took a drive-around-peak at Porsche & BMW. The Alfa dealer is full of Nissan crossovers instead of new cars, which is a forbidding sign.

My 4 year old  daughter saw the GT3s and said, “Dad! They sell race cars? I love race cars!”

I loved seeing these classic front-engine cars on the lot next to Taycans, Boxsters, and 992s. I kinda want that 944 Turbo.

They say 70% of old Porsches are still on the road, but I think that number will increase as 912s, 914s, 944s, 928s, 986s, and the 996 increase in value.

Get in now. A ‘67 912 coupe sold for more than $90k on BAT today.

At Autohaus, I spotted a M4 GTS next to an 8 Series coupe back near the service area.

Back in 2011, I was suuuuuper close to pulling the trigger on a lightly modified  ‘outlaw’ 911 (I believe it was a long hood). It sold for around $38k. That was my “get in now” missed opportunity.

Definitely agree. Any long hood under 50k is a deal—depending on rust of course.

But think about how 912s were $3,000 cars all day long for decades until long hoods shots up in value in Europe. What a crazy shift.

It was a good time to tell her about  the BMW E36.

At some point, performance doesn’t matter and it’s all about style.

Agreed. For me that happened when I started riding motorcycles and realized how slow even the fastest cars are because of weight.

So I really like the original principal of Porsche design which was to build light cars rather than powerful cars. Obviously safety and emissions regulations ended the application of that principal, but its a good one.

So my motto is “ buy the oldest Porsche you can afford.”
